Looking back at my early work, which spans about 15 years, I can see a progression that at times wanders into a more abstract landscape. My influences at that time were the French Fauves and the California Color Field painters, while always being inspired by the Adirondacks and the many moods of the changing of seasons. I have always enjoyed working on large canvases especially the square format.
I paint tryptichs and dyptichs that create a tension from the panel breaks and the wide expanse of landscape. I work with vigorous brush strokes that capture the immediacy of the moment depicting the spirit of the place.
The icons series seem to evolve out of my love of early altarpieces. I have a compulsive habit of picking up interesting woodland objects and stones, so applying the found objects to the work seemed like a natural progression.
